Share Your Love Of Storytelling And Reading With Your Campers

It seems that in this day and age, many children are turning more toward electronics and reading less than youngsters from previous eras. It can seem extra clear when you take kids on a camping trip and they have to go without WiFi for a few days. You can share your love of storytelling and reading with your young camp members by trying the following activities.

Have the Campers Act Out Parts of a Story

If you want the children to fully immerse themselves in a story that you plan on reading aloud, add an improvised performance to the mix. Select an adventure book for boys or girls that pertains to the wilderness so the campers can relate to some of the situations that the book's characters are faced with. Read the book in entirety to familiarize yourself with the plot. Then, prepare some costumes or props that the kids can use while recreating specific parts of the story.

On an evening when you don't have any other activities planned for the boys, invite them to join you in the camp's recreational room for a storytelling session. Before you begin to read aloud, tell the campers that you are going to provide them with clothes and accessories that can be used to create a rendition of various parts of the book. This will prompt the campers to listen intently to the story so that they are educated about the characters and plot. After reading the book, welcome each camper to choose a character from the book and ask everyone to dress up and perform a live skit.

Encourage Evening Reading Sessions

The campers will be spending plenty of time outdoors and exerting themselves through recreational activities. Each evening, the boys may wish to decompress by relaxing with some interesting books. Purchase a variety of adventure books that are geared toward the ages of the campers.

Invite the children to choose books that they prefer and allow the campers to read the stories in a common area or lounge. As an incentive, award points to the children if they are willing to discuss what the books are about during an informal group meeting.

After each successful book review, grant awards or special privileges to the campers who have participated in the reading activity. If the campers enjoy this reading exercise, rotate the books often so that the children have an opportunity to read each of the stories.
